This Sunday, will Mormon women show
who wears the pants in the family?
Possibly unofficially but consistently, the LDS Church has long required (or at least pressured) women to wear dresses to church services. A new Facebook page encourages Mormon women to wear pants to their church meetings this coming Sunday, December 16, 2012. You can read the page by clicking here (being a Facebook user isn’t required). Men are invited to show their support by trading their white shirts (which they are pressured, though less so, to wear) for purple. Our guess is that the Mormon Church will handle the event with aplomb. Their staying out of the recent spate of state elections regarding same-sex marriage may indicate that they learned a lesson from the backlash following their meddling in California’s Proposition 8. The real questions are: how many Mormon women “get it,” agree, and want to participate; and, how many of those women, long cowed into “obeying our [male] leaders,” will find the wherewithal to go through with it. But it’s a start. The FB page also presents this link to “… a comprehensive list of the doctrinally unnecessary gender inequities that exist within the church.” Worth checking out. |
