Locals LDS and non tend to think the LDS Church was anti-liquor from the git-go. Not so. Indeed, as historian Richard Bushman points out in his church-favored biography Rough Stone Rolling, Mormon Church founder Joseph Smith, Jr., enjoyed frequent brewskies. His father (whose name, not surprisingly, was Joseph Smith, Sr.) may well have had an alcohol problem.
