It’s Just About the Pants My Ass
Some Mormon women are rebelling against not being permitted to wear pants to church. Reactions among the faithful range from “so wear pants, already,” to accusations of apostasy, insubordination, and blasphemy, to claims of a non-issue by pointing out that nowhere is the practice of women wearing pants to church officially verboten. This last obfuscates. There is within the church a persistent meme that amounts to the same thing. Those not familiar with the faith might be tempted to say, “If you want to wear pants and your faith won’t let you, find one that will.” It’s not that simple. Mormons are taught that theirs is “the only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth,” and that all other churches individually and collectively constitute the great and abominable church of the devil. These teachings rather rob other religions of any allure. |
In a well thought-out and sensitive editorial, Doree Ashcraft, a believing and participating Mormon, points out an unfortunate effect of a no-pants practice. To read it, please click here.
